CUYAMA — November 2, 2026. Cuyama Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency’s 2025 groundwater plan describes severe long-term overdraft and modeling indicating substantial reductions in pumping may be needed.
A basin shared by four counties
The Cuyama Basin crosses portions of Santa Barbara, Ventura, Kern and San Luis Obispo counties. Water extraction by farms and other users can affect the aquifer’s long-term condition.
What the plan actually says
The agency reports models estimating a 50%–67% basinwide reduction may be required, while cautioning that more data and model review are needed to confirm the exact distribution and amount. The estimate is not an individual household’s adopted mandatory cut.
How residents can follow implementation
The agency has a 2025 final plan, periodic evaluation and annual reporting materials online. Residents should distinguish planning analysis from legally effective extraction fees or orders adopted by the public agency.
